Nightmares are dreams that are scary enough to wake up your child. Children dream much more intensively than adults and have more nightmares. In addition, children under the age of six have difficulty in differentiating between dreams and reality. Nightmares can include frightening images such as animals, ghosts, monsters or bad people. Nightmares are most likely to occur very late at night or early in morning, during the dreaming stage of sleep.
Exactly what causes nightmares is not always known, however, they can sometimes be tied to a stressful emotional or physical event, such as moving house, starting school, violent television shows, or a parent break up. Sometimes not getting enough sleep or not having a regular bedtime routine may cause nightmares. Also, if your child becomes sick, the fever and some medications may cause nightmares.
When your child wakes up after a nightmare, he/she will probably be scared and remember what the dream was about. It is important to first help them calm down and feel safe. It is important to heed the child’s feelings and not to treat the nightmare as trivial. Turn on the light and reassure them everything is OK.
If your child is young enough, a “nightmare protector” such as a flashlight or stuffed animal can help sooth your child. It could be a good strategy to check under the bed with the child, in order to prove that there are no hidden monsters rather than merely say that there are no monsters. It may also be beneficial to give a teddy bear the job of keeping watch to ensure that all monsters and bad dreams are banished.
To assist with dealing with nightmares, it is important to implement a regular, calming bedtime routine. In addition, the sleeping environment and sleeping platform are also important factors in giving your child the best opportunity for a good night’s sleep.
Nightmares tend to run their course and usually disappear over time. However, if your child’s nightmares do not stop after what you believe is an extended period of time and your child’s ability to function during the day is affected, it is time to have your doctor investigate.
